The camel manifests its merit in dangerous places. It has a secret understanding of springs and sources, subtle indeed is its knowledge” –Kuo P’u, 3rd century. The camel was an integral part of transportation along the Silk Road. These animals carried religious documents, spices, and of course silks for thousands of miles, being slowly domesticated by their human counterparts. In this painting, I imagine a camel chimaera that has dominion of a life-giving desert oasis along the Silk Road.
