Born in 2017, the Split Light was a paper model for an MFA thesis project. The model languished for months in a box with other paper models, periodically seeing the light of day as a shadow-casting plaything.
Created to explore light + dark, visible + hidden, public + private, the Split Light has rectilinear volumes “split” into smaller volumes by slits. Shadow casting is its extraordinary power. Reborn in 2020, the Split Light was stabilized as a wooden structure. Evolving with different scales, bases, and bulbs, the Split Light retained its magical light and shadow casting wonder.
